Chapter Nine

Back at Brent and Scot's B&B, Amalia slept well and woke early the next day. She'd been tempted to ask Paige to spend the night, but her exhaustion was just too great. She stretched and decided that today she'd take it easy. After all, she was going to be living here from now on. There was no need to try and squeeze everything in all at once as if she were on some two-week vacation.

She thought about all she'd seen in the last three days. She felt her face flush as she remembered what had happened Wednesday night. She'd never slept with someone that quickly. Still, she had to admit it had felt wonderful to touch a woman again and to be touched in return. She traced the scar on her chest and belly. She'd wondered if she'd ever feel attractive again, but Paige had certainly made it clear that she was. She closed her eyes and ran her fingers lightly across her lips, reliving Paige's kisses. Just the thought of her, so much like Kathy and yet so different, made her tremble inside.

She glanced at Kathy's photo on the nightstand and then, with a deep sigh, threw the covers off and got out of bed. After a quick, hot shower, she was dressed and drinking coffee in Scot and Brent's living room. They'd left her a note along with breakfast. Scot had chosen to fly to Oahu with Brent and they would be spending the night. She thought it a bit odd at first that they would leave a guest alone, but she was glad they were comfortable enough with her to do so. Maybe she'd ask Paige to stay with her. They were to meet tonight to go on a manta ray dive.

She got up from the couch and dialed the number Paige had given her. A man answered and she asked for Paige. A moment later, Paige's voice made goose bumps rise on Amalia's arms.

"You want to spend the day together?" Amalia asked, suddenly feeling spontaneous. "I thought we might drive up to the Parker Ranch in Waimea." So much for her decision to take it easy.

"You just don't know when to stop, do you? I think you need to rest before our dive tonight."

Amalia felt a flash of irritation even though Paige's tone had been teasing. She'd had people telling her these past two years what she should do, and she wasn't about to let some stranger do it now.

"I think I know what I need," she said, hearing the anger in her voice.

"I'm just trying to watch out for you, Amalia. Why don't we go to the beach? Get some sun. Maybe swim a little to get used to the water for tonight."

Amalia knew lazing around on the sand would still be resting, but she decided Paige did have a point. She really had overdone it this last week or so. And she did owe Paige for having cut short the hike.

"Sorry I was so curt.
